Frequently we hear “I hope to wake up in heaven after I die” or “who can know for sure” when asked the question if they know where they will go when they die. It is possible through the Bible or God’s personal letter to us to find the answers or the Good News to these and many other questions or uncertainties.
However, we must start with the understanding that God is Holy, Perfect and Sinless and that we, through Adam, are a sinful people. Romans 3:23 tells us “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” and “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;…” (Isaiah 64:6). So when we even begin to try and think of pleasing a Holy God by our good deeds it is impossible and would die in our sinful condition forever separated from God – “For the wages of sin is death…, (Romans 6:23).
Despite our sinful condition and our certain final destination of complete separation from God (hell), He still loves us and is willing to extend to us a way of escape of this eternal punishment – “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16) and the conclusion of Romans 6:23 “…but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. Yet there are still people who think they can do something on their own to get to heaven or God’s dwelling place. John 14:6 reminds us what Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life, No one comes to the Father except through me”.
So God has made it very clear through His letter to us that we are eternally lost in this sinful condition we were born in. Our only escape is through this gift that He is offering to us, His Son Jesus Christ. His death on the cross was to take our punishment and His resurrection from the dead is what gives us the hope of eternal life. But we cannot just know this to be the case; we must act on it and make this a part of our life. We must ask God to forgive us of our sins and ask Jesus Christ to take away those sins and take up residence in our heart. By doing this, we are placing our faith and trust in Jesus Christ to meet the demands of a Holy and Righteous God. Because God cannot lie, His promise is true that if we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, He will give to us eternal life – the hope and assurance of waking up in heaven after we die. There is NO other way. This is the Good News we share with all those we have contact with.
