TOGO
Christian education in Togo has all the typical problems of a third world country: lack of money, few dedicated and educated teachers, few textbooks or teaching materials, overcrowded classroom and little government help.
A.B.W.E. has been in Togo for over 30 years. Because of our hospital, blind center, pastoral education ministry and over 60 local churches and chapels, the mission is well respected by all the people and government authorities. Since the quality of education is very poor here, our Christian families, pastors and church members began starting their own schools. They asked the missionaries for help and in 2004 we responded with a quality, loving, comprehension-based, Christian education program for their children in 16 church schools. The needs fall into three general areas:
1) Teacher training – Grace Baptist Church & Academy in Chattanooga, TN has responded magnificently by supplying the funds and experienced teachers to train 15-20 Togolese teachers each year in our School of Teacher Training. Each teacher receives a salary, training for one year and educational materials for the grade level that they teach.
2) Curriculum textbooks & materials – We are busy preparing the Christian texts for each grade level for the current 16 Christian schools but the funds to write, compile, translate and print these texts must be raised.
3) Capital costs – While the tuition ($10-$50 annually per child) is sufficient to pay the salary of the teachers, like most schools across the world, money is needed for land and buildings.
We believe that involving Christian school children in missions projects for other children around the world is an excellent way to cultivate a heart for missions for the next generation of American adults.
