Bible Translation & Literacy Teaching

Purpose statement:

The purpose of the Bible Translation/Literacy Ministry Team is to oversee and direct all Bible translation and literacy projects undertaken by the Togo team in order to better equip believers and churches in Togo.

The Literacy program exists to strengthen our churches by helping our members learn how to read the Bible in their mother tongue.  We are currently training teachers in our local churches to teach classes in both the Ewe and Kabyé languages.

We are also using literacy as a form of evangelism in the southern part of Togo.  Teachers are opening classes to anyone in the village and able to share the gospel during the classes.  We hope to use literacy as well for hard to reach people groups, such as in the Anufo language for the Northern Outreach project.

With the New Testament translation currently finished in the Kabyé language, we are concentrating literacy training in Kabyé because only 5% of the people can read in this language.  If you might be interested helping with this great need contact our Team Leader about your wishes and we'll see what the Lord has in mind.

Please pray for this ministry, for the teachers that they would have strength and love as they teach and for the students that they would persevere

I.  What is the purpose of the Togo Team literacy/translation team?

Helping the Togolese to read the word of God in their mother tongue

Currently we are involved in:

1)  Just completed translating the New Testament into the Kabiyé tribal language.

The Kabiyé language is the second largest tribal language spoken in

                                                                            Togo

Only 5% of the Kabiyé speakers can read this language

2)  Teaching people to read their mother tongue

Currently over 250 students in classes for both the Ewé and Kabiyé speakers

3)  Training literacy teachers throughout Togo

Over 60 teachers have been trained in 2007

More training needs to be done in 2012

II.  Praises/Prayer Requests

1)   Literacy teachers would be faithful and be encouraging to their students

2)  Students would persevere to continue in the classes until they can read the Bible

3)  God would raise up more teachers to teach more classes

4)  Wisdom for Bible translators to accurately translate God’s word

III.  Needs

Bible Translation needs:

We would like to encourage you to consider how you could help with this team’s financial needs.  They need approximately $130 a month to cover expenses like salaries for translators, cost for printer ink cartridges, meetings, consultant’s visits, etc.  Please consider how you can help.  If you can, please ask our Team Leader how you can assist in these needs.  The need for printing the Bible when the translation of the entire Bible is complete is looming out there and we have another $4 – 5,000 that needs to be raised.  Or if you would be interested in helping print at least 2 chapters that is $500.

Literacy needs:

We need approximately $400 to cover the cost of training teachers to teach people how to read.  Then when they’ve completed their classes, each student is given their very own Bible.  We need $3,000 to help us get these Bibles in to people’s hands. Please help us.

Please consider how you can help us in this tremendous project of Bible Translation and Literacy training.  You will reap enormous dividends!
